As the New Year begins, many of us feel the pull to make resolutions—promises we hope to keep but often let slip away as the months pass. What if this year, instead of focusing on what we want to do, we focused on what we need to let go of? And instead of making a list of resolutions we likely won’t keep, we leaned into transformation—allowing God to replace the old with something new?
Transformation
In Colossians 3, Paul provides a vision for living a transformed life in Christ. He begins with a challenge: “Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3, NIV).
New Life In Christ
This passage reminds us that we’ve been given new life in Christ as believers. This new life calls for a shift in focus from earthly distractions to heavenly priorities. Our identity is no longer tied to the things of this world but is secured in Christ.
The start of a new year can be a time to reflect on what we must let go of. In Colossians 3:5-9, Paul lists the things of our “earthly nature” that we are called to put to death—sins like anger, greed, and impurity. These things, which once defined us, no longer have a place in the life of someone transformed by Christ.
What Will You Leave Behind?
But the beauty of this chapter isn’t just in what we leave behind—it’s in what we take on. Paul encourages us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12, NIV). Just as we dress ourselves each day, we are invited to “put on” the character of Christ, reflecting His love for the world.
And above all these virtues, Paul says to “put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:14, NIV). Love holds everything together, the foundation for our new life.
Shift Your Perspective
So, as we begin this New Year, rather than focusing on goals that may fade, let’s shift our perspective. Let’s ask God to show us what we need to let go of—old habits, attitudes, or desires—and let’s be intentional about putting on the characteristics of Christ. In doing so, we’ll reflect His love and grace to the world around us, not just for a season but for a lifetime.
