Her Path to Writing
Before she was an author, Heidi Gray McGill spent her career finding ways for other people to fully use their gifts. She worked at Clemson University coordinating the scholarship program within Major Gifts, then served as South Carolina’s Disaster Fundraiser for the American Red Cross, raising relief funds after hurricanes, earthquakes, and fires across the country. She later founded and directed an English as a Second Language program, a role she saw as a mission field. Rather than preach to her students, she loved them the way she believed Jesus would, and let that love speak for itself.
When she closed the ESL program in March 2020, she wasn’t leaving ministry, only looking for a new platform for it. After years as a beta reader, she felt God nudging her toward writing, despite having no formal training. That same month she began her first novel, Desire of My Heart, published it that November, and has been writing ever since. McGill’s work spans both traditional and independent publishing; she reacquired the rights to her earliest contemporary titles and is now expanding them into a longer series.
Faith and Family
McGill lives out 1 Samuel 1:18 as a daily compass: “[Hannah] said, ‘May your servant find favor in your eyes.’ Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.” She holds to the belief that joy is a choice available regardless of circumstance, a conviction that runs through every book she writes.
McGill has retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive condition that has left her legally blind with less than 10 percent of her peripheral vision remaining. Rather than limiting her, the condition has refined her focus, shaping how she writes about resilience and walking by faith, not by sight.
She lives in South Carolina just below the Charlotte, North Carolina, border with her husband of nearly 35 years. She’s the mother of two adult daughters and adores the men who love them, and she’s grandmother to three grandsons, who supply no shortage of material for her blog.
