As the clock ticks toward a new year, it can feel like the weight of the past year lingers, especially if your plans and hopes have crumbled in ways you never imagined. For those facing the heartache of divorce, or watching a loved one go through it, the start of a new year may feel more like an ending than a beginning. The grief and trauma that divorce brings can be overwhelming, leaving many to wonder if joy, healing, and peace are even possible anymore. If this resonates with you, know that you are not alone—and that God has not abandoned you in your pain.
Acknowledging the Pain
I can’t begin to imagine the depths of grief, confusion, and heartache you may be feeling right now. Divorce is a loss that ripples through every aspect of life, impacting not just the couple but also children, friends, and families. You may feel like you’ve lost your sense of stability, identity, and hope for the future. But amid this sorrow, I want to offer some encouragement from Scripture.
Finding Comfort in God’s Word
The Bible reminds us that God sees our pain and cares deeply about our broken hearts. In Psalm 34:18, we are told, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse is a balm for troubled souls, reminding us that God’s nearness is not dependent on our circumstances but is an unshakable promise. When we feel crushed by loss, He invites us to pour our hurt and sorrow before Him.
Another verse that offers peace in times of uncertainty is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” While it may be hard to see how any good could come from a situation like divorce, this verse points us to the truth that God’s plans for us go beyond the brokenness of today. His future for us is still filled with hope, even when we can’t see it yet.
Lastly, in times of anxiety or doubt about what comes next, Isaiah 41:10 provides a firm reassurance: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This passage speaks to the promise of God’s sustaining power—He will not let you walk through this alone. His strength is sufficient, and He will uphold you as you face the hard road ahead.
Offering Hope Through Stories
For those walking this difficult journey, finding solace in the experiences of others can also provide comfort. In my latest anthology, Broken, you’ll find stories from multiple authors who tackle the challenging theme of divorce. These aren’t fairy-tale stories where everything wraps up perfectly, but they reflect the reality that life doesn’t always offer a happily-ever-after in the way we might expect. However, each story points to the fact that healing is possible, and even in the aftermath of broken relationships, God’s love and grace are ever-present.
Whether you’re going through divorce yourself or standing alongside someone who is, these stories can remind you that God is at work, even in the messiness of life. The pain is real, but so is the potential for new beginnings—beginnings that might look different than what you planned but are no less meaningful.
A New Year, A New Perspective
As you enter the new year, you may not have all the answers, and the future may still be uncertain. But as you take each step, remember that God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). The dawn of a new year doesn’t erase past struggles, but it offers a fresh start—a reminder that God is with you, walking beside you, offering strength, and guiding your path.
If you or someone you know is struggling with the pain of divorce, Broken may offer not only a sense of understanding but a glimpse of the hope and healing that God can bring, even through the most difficult circumstances.
