The Quiet Voice of God – How to Hear It

Finding God’s Presence in the Stillness: Beyond the Significant and Loud Moments.

Although I’m far from learned, I enjoy delving into God’s word. When I read 1 Kings 19 for the first time, I thought God would show up to the prophet Elijah in a big, mighty way. In the story, a shattering wind howled, but God wasn’t in the wind. Then came an earthquake that rattled the ground and a bright, raging fire, but God wasn’t in the earthquake or the fire.

Sometimes, we think God only moves through significant events or loud, dance-worthy moments.

In a world filled with noise and distractions, it’s easy to assume that God’s presence is only grand and miraculous. We often look for Him in the spectacular and the overwhelming. However, Elijah’s encounter with God teaches us a valuable lesson: God doesn’t always use the extraordinary; sometimes, He speaks in a still, small voice.

The Quiet Voice of God – How to Hear It

There came a gentle whisper after the wind, earthquake, and fire, and that was where Elijah found God (1 Kings 19:12-13). This gentle whisper, often translated as a “still small voice,” reminds us that God’s communication is not limited to the dramatic. He often speaks to us in the quiet moments when we are still enough to listen. This transformative power of God’s quiet voice can inspire hope and bring about profound change in our lives.

Listening Beyond the Spectacular

In our daily lives, we can hear God’s quiet voice through prayer, Scripture, and the subtle nudges of the Holy Spirit. It’s in the quiet moments of reflection, the gentle promptings of our hearts, and the peace that surpasses understanding.

To hear God’s quiet voice, we need to actively create space for silence in our busy lives. It’s not enough to hope for quiet moments; we must intentionally set aside time for prayer and meditation, read His Word, and be attentive to His presence in the mundane. We can tune our hearts to hear His gentle whisper in these quiet moments. This commitment to creating space for silence can be a powerful motivator in our spiritual journey.

Discovering God in the Quiet Moments

Grammie, in Desire of My Heart, knows how to do this. Her character is based off my mother, Ardis Gray. My mom knew how to stop and let God’s presence settle on her spirit. It’s something we can all learn to do with practice.

God’s Quiet Voice Today: Accessible and Near

Let’s not overlook the quiet ways God communicates. The same God who spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper speaks to us today. His quiet voice is not distant or unattainable; it is accessible to each one of us. This reassurance of God’s nearness can bring comfort and peace to our hearts.
