Finding Joy in Ecclesiastical Humor and Divine Laughter —
Sometimes, the unexpected happens in the orderly realm of church bulletins—those sacred scrolls of announcements and hymn numbers. Today, let’s explore some delightful bulletin bloopers that remind us of God’s sense of humor amidst our earnest gatherings.
The Misadventures of the Holy Typo
Imagine this: as congregants peruse the bulletin for upcoming events, a typo transforms a “special musical performance” into a “spectacular mule performance.” Suddenly, visions of a talented equine choir dance in our heads, prompting laughter and a gentle reminder that even our best-laid plans can take amusing turns.
When Pews Play Musical Chairs
During a particularly spirited service, an inadvertent misprint designates a time for “musical chairs” instead of “musical airs.” Cue a moment of confused glances and suppressed giggles as we contemplate the idea of musical pew shuffling—a reminder, perhaps, to remain flexible in worship.
“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;” (Psalm 95:6).
Lost in Translation: The Foreign Language Fumble
In a multicultural congregation, a bulletin’s attempt to welcome guests in multiple languages inadvertently combines phrases, resulting in a hybrid greeting that leaves both newcomers and regulars scratching their heads. Yet, in our linguistic labyrinth, we find unity in laughter and humility before our diverse Creator.
“When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.” (Acts 2:6)
In our church bulletins and planned services, bloopers are more than mistakes—they remind us of God’s loving presence and humor. So, whether we’re laughing at a typo or a translation error, let’s embrace these bloopers as moments of joy from the LORD.
“Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, ‘The LORD has done great things for them.'” (Psalm 126:2) This verse from Psalm 126 celebrates the infectious joy that bursts forth when we recognize God’s hand in the unexpected and the amusing.
Laugh with gratitude and humility, knowing that God delights in our laughter and finds joy in our gatherings. After all, in His divine comedy, every bulletin blooper carries a message of grace and a touch of heavenly humor.
Oh my goodness, what a great post! I love the title of this blog. I am my church’s librarian and I lead a book club. Something like this would be a great name for our book club.
How FUN!
My all-time favorite is when a veterinarian in our congregation stood up to pray aloud at church for another member who was experiencing back and leg pain. He inadvertently prayed, “O Lord, please heal the pain she’s having in her hind legs.” The whole assembly had to muffle their laughter!!
That is HYSTERICAL!
