Lessons from Scripture and Stories of Faithful Living.
In 7th grade, my dad drove me to Junior High every day. During those rides, we practiced memorizing Psalm 1. Each day, he would shed more light on the scripture’s significance. He also helped me understand how to apply scripture and incorporate it into my life for faithful living. Those moments with my dad are among my most treasured memories.
In the Christian life, “blessed” and “blessing” are cherished words. Psalm 1 begins with “Blessed,” encapsulating the essence of what follows. David writes that the blessed person avoids ungodly influence. There’s a progression in how ungodliness can seep into our lives: we start by walking near it, then we stop and stand, and finally, we sit and become part of it.
The path we choose to follow determines the course of our lives.
As Christians, it’s vital to resist the ways of the world. Sin often creeps in gradually, making the journey toward worldliness a subtle but dangerous one. But those on the righteous path stay vigilant against this creeping influence. They are determined to stay focused on God’s teachings, to resist the temptations of the world, and to live a life that is pleasing to Him. This determination is what keeps them on the right path.
The blessed person “delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on his law day and night.” This is not just a suggestion; it’s a powerful tool that empowers and guides us. God’s Word is not just a source of wise and godly counsel; it’s a roadmap for our lives.
We are truly blessed if we fill our hearts and minds with Scripture and live by it. Followers of Christ must immerse themselves in God’s Word. Regular reading, meditating, journaling, and memorizing Scripture will deepen our roots in His love and guide us on the righteous path.
Integrating spiritual principles into everyday life
Psalm 1 is a wisdom psalm that guides us in integrating spiritual principles into everyday life and staying on the right path. Though we might be uncertain about our direction, God always knows. The counsel we follow shapes our life’s journey. Verse 6 underscores that there are only two ways to live: the way of the wicked and the way of the righteous.
There is no middle ground.
God sees the path you are on. Is your life like a tree firmly planted by streams of water or like chaff blowing in the wind? Let this question fuel your determination to live in the way of the righteous.
In my book Stitched on My Heart, Delphina, a runaway slave, exemplifies the righteous path through her life of service. Despite no longer needing to serve, she delights in helping others, driven by her faith and commitment to God’s teachings. Like a tree by streams of water, her life flourishes because she chooses the righteous path.
Delphina’s story is a powerful reminder of the blessings that come from delighting in the law of the Lord.
