As an author, I often chase what’s between the lines. I wonder about the characters Scripture doesn’t name. You know…the ones who disappear from the story without resolution.
Take John 8, for example. A woman is caught in adultery and thrown before Jesus. But something’s missing.
Where is the man?
Seeing the Whole Story When Others Look Away
According to the law (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22), both were guilty. Both were to be punished. Yet, only the woman is dragged before the crowd, humiliated in the name of justice.
Was this a trap?
It seems all is lost. Then, like any great story, comes the plot twist.
Jesus Doesn’t Follow the Script
The Pharisees thought they had Jesus pinned. If He said to stone her, His reputation as a friend of sinners would crumble. If He said to release her, He’d be breaking the law.
So Jesus stooped and wrote in the dirt. We don’t know what He wrote. But we do know what He said:
“Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” — John 8:7
And just like that, they left. One by one. Not because they were merciful, but because they were convicted.
Grace That Rewrites Our Story
Jesus didn’t excuse the woman’s sin—He forgave it.
“Neither do I condemn you,” He said. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” — John 8:11
Her story didn’t end in shame. It began in grace.
And make no mistake—this grace wasn’t cheap. Jesus would one day hang on a cross to bear the weight of her sin… and ours.
Who Are You in the Story?
Maybe you’ve felt like the woman—exposed and condemned.
Maybe you’ve been the Pharisee—quick to judge, slow to see your own sin.
Or maybe, if we’re honest, you’ve been the man—guilty, but silent in the background.
Whoever you are, Jesus invites you forward.
He sees the full picture. And He’s not afraid of the mess. He brings truth with tenderness, justice with mercy, and hope with healing.
💡 Reflection Questions
- Have I received God’s forgiveness, or am I still trying to hide my guilt?
- Am I quick to throw stones or quick to offer grace?
- How can I live today like someone truly forgiven?
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for rewriting my story with Your mercy. Teach me to walk in the freedom You offer, and help me extend that same grace to others. I’m no longer condemned—because You were condemned in my place. Amen.
