Finding God’s Purpose in Closed Doors, Midnight Moments, and Unexpected Turns
As readers and writers, we know how quickly a story can turn. A character thinks they’re headed one way, only for life, and the Author, to redirect them. Acts 16 is full of those kinds of unexpected plot twists. Paul and Silas thought they had a clear plan, but God had something very different in mind.
Closed Doors Can Lead to Greater Stories
Paul intended to preach in Asia, but the Spirit stopped him. Instead, he found himself in Philippi, where Lydia (the very first believer in Europe) opened her heart and her home to Christ.
As authors, we know what it’s like to cut a scene or change a storyline we thought was perfect. As readers, we’ve gasped at an ending we didn’t see coming. God works the same way in our lives. A closed door isn’t failure—it may be the start of a chapter we never would’ve written for ourselves.
Midnight Moments Can Birth Miracles
Paul and Silas were beaten and imprisoned for doing good. Yet instead of despairing, they sang hymns. Their worship shook the foundations of the jail and set prisoners free. Literally. Even the jailer’s family came to faith.
Writers face rejection. Readers encounter seasons when life feels heavy. But like Paul and Silas, we can choose praise in the dark days…or months…or years…. Our response to hardship may be the very thing God uses to spark hope in someone else’s story.
The Story Is Always Bigger Than the Scene
When Paul and Silas were finally released, they encouraged the young believers before leaving Philippi. That small beginning became the foundation for a thriving church, and later receiving Paul’s letter to the Philippians, one of the most joy-filled books in the Bible.
A single chapter never tells the complete story. As readers, we turn the page. As writers, we trust the narrative arc. In life, God is always weaving something larger than we can see in the moment.
Prayer
Lord, when my plans shift or my storyline feels uncertain, remind me that You are the true Author. Help me trust Your plot twists, knowing You write with eternal purpose. Amen.

Heidi, the line “A closed door isn’t failure—it may be the start of a chapter we never would’ve written for ourselves” really hit home for me!🙌! THANK YOU for giving me a jump-in-my-step today on what God may have in store for me instead of being in my “prison” of turmoil!
We have all been, are currently in, or will be in that space. I’m so glad these words touched your heart. I lvoe how you said “jump in my step.” What a perfect visual!
