Who Do You Think You Are?

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: A Devotional Inspired by Matthew 4 and Dial P for Perfect ~~

Satan rarely shows up with horns and a pitchfork. More often, he whispers in our wilderness moments, poking at our deepest insecurities.

In Matthew 4, John the Baptist has baptized Jesus. The heavens opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and a voice from heaven declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17, ESV).

Then IMMEDIATELY Jesus is led into the wilderness. And what’s the first thing the enemy says?

“If you are the Son of God…”

It wasn’t a question. It was a challenge. A jab at identity.

Satan didn’t doubt who Jesus was, but he wanted Jesus to. That’s his tactic with us, too. He doesn’t need to make you fall flat; he just needs to make you forget who you are. If he can rattle your identity, your faith will tremble with it.

That’s [Satan’s] tactic with us, too. He doesn’t need to make you fall flat; he just needs to make you forget who you are.

Jesus didn’t argue. He didn’t panic. He didn’t explain Himself. He stood firm in the truth already spoken by His Father.

When the Mirror Lies

In my book, Dial P for Perfect, Ginger wrestles with this same issue. Her curves, her wit, her self-deprecating humor—they all hide a fragile identity she isn’t sure anyone will ever love, especially not herself. But Ginger’s journey mirrors the truth of Matthew 4: our value isn’t determined by appearance, performance, or how well we match someone else’s idea of perfection.

Our value isn’t determined by appearance, performance, or how well we match someone else’s idea of perfection.

Giner’s breakthrough doesn’t come when someone finally sees her as beautiful. It comes when she remembers who already does.

And the same is true for you.

You are God’s beloved.

The size of your jeans, the sharpness of your resume, or the length of your to-do list (and the cross throughs and completion checkmarks) doesn’t alter that truth. The lies whispered in the desert do not define you. The voice that speaks from Heaven defines you.

The lies whispered in the desert do not define you. The voice that speaks from Heaven defines you.

When the Wilderness Whispers

Maybe today you feel like you’re walking through a wilderness. Loneliness, uncertainty, insecurity. Maybe you’re tired of trying to prove your worth or earn love that’s already been given.

Let Jesus’ response in the wilderness be yours: Stand on the Word. Declare the truth. Reject the lie.

Because identity matters.

And your identity is this: Daughter of the King. Chosen. Redeemed. Loved. Whole.

You are who God says you are.

Prayer

Father, thank You for reminding me that my identity is not up for debate. Help me quiet the lies that echo in hard places and hear only Your voice. When I doubt, remind me of who I am in You. Let the wilderness be where I grow stronger, not smaller. And help me, like Ginger, to see myself the way You always have—perfectly designed and deeply loved.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

Want to experience Ginger’s journey for yourself?
