The Danger of Comparison: How Self-Deception Holds Us Back

The Danger of Comparison

Struggling with self-doubt and comparison? Discover how Galatians 6:3-4 encourages us to focus on God’s calling rather than measuring ourselves against others.

The Trap of Comparison

“If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.” — Galatians 6:3 (NIV)

Well, that verse hit me between the eyes—literally. My phone slipped. I’ll let you use your imagination. But I needed that laugh because this truth stings.

As an independent (indie) author, I find myself falling into the comparison trap too often. I see other authors thriving—at least from the outside—and I assume I’m falling short. The thoughts creep in:

  • “I’m not as successful because I didn’t have the same advantages.”
  • “Maybe I’m not good enough to fulfill my God-given mission.”

The self-doubt leads to excuses, and before I know it, I’m stuck in a cycle of self-deception. But Paul offers a remedy for this mindset.

Measuring the Right Way

“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” — Galatians 6:4 (NIV)

When I read this verse, my human nature wanted to protest:

“But God, I write slowly. I don’t have an English degree. I battle low vision and migraines. I juggle grandkids. And, and, and…”

Yet, Scripture is clear: I’m supposed to measure myself against my own actions—not against the success or struggles of others.

If I keep comparing, I’ll keep making excuses.

Ouch.

The reality is that I spend so much time noticing what others have accomplished that my own progress gets lost in the noise. The enemy loves this because it keeps me from fulfilling my calling. Instead of trusting God’s plan for me, I deceive myself into believing I’m not enough.

When the Lies Get Loud

Comparison doesn’t just steal joy; it stifles ministry.

On days when I have zero book sales or see a return, my mind spirals:

  • “I’m not making a difference.”
  • “I’m not contributing to Kingdom work.”
  • “I’ll never succeed unless I (fill in the blank).”

But those thoughts are lies. My purpose isn’t to chase sales or reviews—it’s to be obedient to my calling. God has placed me in this space to weave His truth into my stories so readers long for that same faith in their lives.

Numbers don’t define my ministry—faithfulness does.

The Power of Community

“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” — Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)

When self-doubt creeps in, I’ve learned to call in reinforcements.

My author friends don’t see writing as competition but as a ministry. They remind me that we’re all unique instruments in God’s symphony, each playing our part to create something beautiful.

Martin Luther once said,

“My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.”

Just like music restores the soul, a strong faith-based community can uplift us when we’re weary.

Finding Your Encouragement

Wherever you are in your journey—whether writing, parenting, serving, or simply walking in faith—don’t let comparison rob you of your purpose.

Instead, find a community of believers who will:

✅ Speak truth when you doubt.
✅ Encourage you when you’re discouraged.
✅ Remind you of God’s call when the lies feel overwhelming.

We are not alone in this journey. Fix your eyes on Christ, not comparison. Trust His plan, not someone else’s progress.

And when the enemy whispers that you’re not enough? Remember: God has already called you worthy.
