Finding Strength in Weakness: Lessons from Gideon’s Story in Judges 6 ~~
When I read Judges 6, I see a powerful message about how God can use us, even when we feel “less than.” I often feel inadequate, not good enough, inferior, unworthy, insufficient, lacking confidence, subpar, below average, and deficient. Did I leave anything out?
If you’ve ever felt the same way, you’re not alone.
The story of Gideon begins during a difficult season for the Israelites, who once again find themselves in trouble for disobeying God. God appears to Gideon in this challenging context, calling him to lead the Israelites out of their misery. Gideon’s story offers profound lessons, especially when we feel inadequate.
Gideon: The Least Likely Hero
First, let’s look at who Gideon is. He is a man with no power, describing himself as “the least of his family.” Often, we feel like Gideon, thinking God will use others because we don’t have what it takes. But Gideon’s story shows us that God delights in using those who seem unqualified by worldly standards. When we feel less than others, we should remember that God sees our potential and strengths, even when we don’t.
Questions and Doubts are Natural
Second, Gideon has questions and doubts throughout this passage. He needs proof that God is truly speaking to him and asks questions. This reaction is very natural. When God calls us, it’s common to have doubts and seek reassurance. Gideon’s dialogue with God reassures us that seeking confirmation and clarity is okay. God understands our need for assurance and is patient with us.
I had a long list of questions when I felt the tug on my heart to write as my platform to share Jesus with others. It wasn’t doubting God’s sanity; it was doubting my ability.
Obedience Despite Doubts
Last, Gideon obeys God and follows His commandments, even though it means going against his family. Despite his fears and doubts, Gideon takes action. And throughout his journey, he continues to seek signs of God’s presence. This shows us that obeying God can be challenging and may require us to step out of our comfort zones. Yet, God is with us, providing protection and guidance.
Thankfully, unlike Gideon’s, my family supported me wholeheartedly with what I feel is a calling to write. Sometimes, they believed in me more than I believed in myself. There were also days when their support kept me on this writing journey. Obeying God can be challenging, and, like Gideon, I understand stepping out of my comfort zone.
Applying Gideon’s Lessons to Our Lives
We often think that God cannot use us in our lives. We doubt ourselves and question God’s plan. Even while following God, we long for His daily presence. Gideon’s experience reflects these feelings, yet God used him mightily. When we feel inadequate, we can take comfort in knowing that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. He sees beyond our limitations and works through us to accomplish His purposes.
Remember, feeling “less than” or inadequate does not disqualify us from being used by God. Like Gideon, we can bring our doubts, questions, and fears to Him and trust that He will guide, protect, and use us for His glory. Let’s embrace our weaknesses as opportunities for God to show His strength and step forward in faith, knowing He is with us every step.
