When God Feels Silent: Trusting His Hand in the Storm

God is at work behind the scenes, weaving a more remarkable story than we can imagine —

There are moments when the waves crash hard, and we’re left feeling alone, wondering if God has heard our prayers. The silence can be deafening, and it’s easy to doubt His goodness when the storm rages on. Yet, even in these moments of uncertainty, we are called to trust that God is at work behind the scenes, weaving a more remarkable story than we can imagine.

Isaiah 40 draws our eyes upward to the One who holds everything together: “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand… marked off the heavens with a span?” (v.12). This is our God—vast, powerful, and full of resources. So why do we doubt His ability to care for us? “Why do you say, O Jacob, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord?’” (v.27). He has not forgotten you.

An Everlasting God

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God… He does not faint or grow weary” (Isaiah 40:28). Though we may feel weak, He never tires. Our God is always active, even when we feel abandoned or lost. Isaiah assures us that “those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). In the waiting, God is renewing, strengthening, and working.

As Corrie ten Boom beautifully said, “Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible.” Faith isn’t about seeing the outcome—it’s about trusting the One who controls it. True faith looks beyond the fog of our present difficulties and holds fast to the reality of God’s promises.

Never Afraid to Trust

When we face unknowns, it’s natural to fear. But Corrie ten Boom also wisely reminds us: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” We may not understand our circumstances, but we can trust the character of the One who holds our future. God’s past faithfulness reminds us that He won’t abandon us in our present trials. When God seems silent, faith whispers that He’s still in control.

Endurance in the Waiting

Waiting is one of the hardest things we do as believers. We live in a world of instant gratification, and waiting on the Lord can feel counterintuitive. But Scripture reminds us that waiting isn’t passive; it’s an active part of our faith journey.

James 1:3-4 tells us that “the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Endurance, or patient endurance, isn’t something we develop when life is easy. It’s formed in the fire of hardship. When we wait on the Lord, we are strengthened in ways we can’t fully see or understand.

Endurance is not just holding on through the pain but trusting that God is shaping us for something greater. It’s about surrendering the timeline of our lives to Him and trusting His process. This waiting time becomes a refining fire where God grows our faith, patience, and trust in Him.

It’s not about focusing on what we lack or the prayers we think haven’t been answered. Instead, it’s about focusing on the One who has promised to be faithful. Sometimes, we cling too tightly to the things of this world, expecting them to satisfy us. But God, in His love, uses seasons of waiting to loosen our grip on these things and draw us closer to Him.

Don’t Lose Heart

As 2 Corinthians 4:16-17 reminds us, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” The hardships you face now are not meaningless; they prepare you for something greater. While the trials may feel overwhelming, they are temporary in light of eternity.

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Faith means trusting God even when we don’t see the complete picture. “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). In the waiting, we must learn to walk by faith, knowing that God sees the end from the beginning. He is always faithful, even when we can’t see what He’s doing.

We must hold our earthly concerns loosely, remembering that our true inheritance is in heaven. In 2 Kings 8, we see a glimpse of God’s faithfulness when a woman whose land had been taken during a famine has her property restored. God orchestrated every detail in her favor, even when she couldn’t see it. The same God who restored her land is working on your behalf, too. Your inheritance in Him is secure, even when the path seems unclear.

Hope That Endures

Hope is not wishful thinking for the believer. It is a confident expectation grounded in God’s unchanging character. Romans 5:5 reminds us, “Hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” Our hope is not based on circumstances but in the God who has already proven His love for us through Jesus Christ.

In seasons of silence and waiting, cling to this hope. Trust that God is faithful to His promises, even when you can’t see the evidence.

“May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thessalonians 3:5)

Praise Him in the Storm

When the storm comes, praise Him. When the waiting feels unbearable, trust Him. Faith sees the invisible hand of God, working even in silence. Never be afraid to trust your unknown future to the One who knows and loves you completely. Keep walking in faith, for He is faithful.
