Green Eggs and Glamour: A Less-Than-Happy Easter Tale

Last month, Easter brought the usual festivities for our family—church service, egg hunts, and enough candy to make Willy Wonka blush. Ah, the memories. But this Easter, I couldn’t help but reminisce about a less-than-happy Easter experience from years gone by.

Picture this: a small church, a bustling congregation, and my dear sister, the multitasking maven, juggling more tasks than a circus performer. It was the era before delegation was an art form, back when potluck meant risking a congealed salad that could double as a doorstop, and deviled eggs that seemed to have taken inspiration from a Jackson Pollock painting after a day basking in the sun.

As we prepped for the big day, my sister, Denise, realized she had forgotten to dye her hair.

Cue my moment of heroism—or so I thought.

“I can handle it,” I declared confidently as if dyeing hair was as simple as boiling an egg.

It turns out there’s more to it than meets the eye. Denise’s hair, already fragile from too many rounds of going lighter, decided to rebel. And where did it choose to showcase its protest? Right at the top, where my amateur hands had started their handiwork.

The color??? Green. Not just any green.

We’re talking Easter Egg Green—a shade not found in any hair dye palette.

Making that year a less-than-happy Easter experience.

In hindsight, it was a comedy of errors. But in the moment, as I surveyed my handiwork, I couldn’t help but panic. On the other hand, Denise handled it like a champ (after a brief moment of shock). She quickly dialed up a church member who happened to be a hairdresser.

The result? A trendy pixie cut…before it was trendy…with green-tipped highlights.

They say laughter is the best medicine; in this case, it was the only cure. While hair disasters are rarely amusing in the moment, they make for great stories afterward. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself—and I’m pretty sure my sister agrees.

Oh…and the color of her dress? Pink. Easter egg pink.
